Our organic orchards rely on owls for pest control. Owls are particularly good at keeping down the vole population, which are a real problem as they chew the roots of young apple trees, which then cause the trees to die.
We enjoy a close relationship with the team at Pitcombe Rock Falconry, and are grateful to them for their help and advice. Also, for turning up in all weathers to support our open orchard events! In 2022, we were delighted to discover that three of the four owl boxes, made and installed by the Pitcombe Rock Falconry, were inhabited by 1 Barn Owl, 1 Tawny Owl and a pair of Barn owls who produced a number of owlets.
